What income assistance programs are available to people with disabilities?
People with disabilities whose annual income is below a certain amount may qualify for social assistance programs provided by their province.
People with disabilities and their families also qualify for a number of other governmental financial benefits, including:
Provincial/Territorial Income Assistance Programs
Alberta
The Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped program provides monthly income assistance to people with disabilities whose disability affects their ability to earn a living.
The Assured Support program provides financial support to people with disabilities who are unable to enter the workplace on a full-time basis.
British Columbia
Under the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Act, people with disabilities may be eligible to receive financial support for employment, shelter, assistive devices, home care, or assistive animal services.
Manitoba
The Employment and Income Assistance program provides financial and vocational assistance to people with disabilities.
New Brunswick
The Disability Supplement program provides people with disabilities with an annual income supplement. This program is provided by New Brunswick Social Development . This Department also provides eligible people with disabilities with financial support.
The Directory of Services Offered to Persons with Disabilities in N.B. provides a list of the services and funding available to people with disabilities in New Brunswick, and information about home modification, long-term financial assistance, and funding for assistive devices.
Newfoundland and Labrador

The Nova Scotia Department of Community Services provides a variety of support services to people with disabilities in Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Disabled Persons Commission can provide more information about these and other services.

Ontario
The local Community and Social Services branch provides funding to families to help cover the costs of raising children with disabilities.
The Ontario Disability Support Program provides a variety of services and financial assistance for people with disabilities. Those who qualify have access to income assistance, employment support, and funding for assistive devices.
Ontario Works is the province’s general social assistance program. People with disabilities who do not quality for the Ontario Disability Support program may be eligible to receive assistance from Ontario Works.
Prince Edward Island
The PEI Disability Support Program provides income assistance and employment support to people with disabilities.
Quebec
The Quebec Allowance for handicapped children provides families with financial assistance to help with the expenses of raising and educating a child with a disability.
The Besoins de gardiennage program (only available in French, but there is information on the program in both languages) provides funding for costs of providing care to persons with disabilities.
Saskatchewan
The Saskatchewan Assistance Plan is a program of last resort for families and individuals who, for various reasons, including disability, illness, low income or unemployment, cannot meet basic living costs.
